It’s no surprise that Florida topped the 10 most searched summer travel destinations by Americans on Trip Advisor’s 2021 Summer Travel Index – but none took the top spot.
The extensive travel survey found that beach destinations are popular; all but two of the survey’s top 10 travel locations have beaches.
Three Florida cities are in the top five, and Florida was the only US state to place more than once.
Orlando, the home of Disney World, came in at No. 2 among America’s most sought-after summer travel destinations, with Key West at No. 4 and Miami Beach at No. 5.
Cancun, Mexico, ranked # 1.
Other cities in Mexico are in the top 10 – Playa del Carmen at # 7, Cabo San Lucas at # 8, and Tulum at # 9.
To complete the top 10, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Las Vegas, respectively # 3 and # 6.
According to Trip Advisor’s findings, 67% of Americans plan to travel this summer, 43% plan to drive and 19% plan to fly. This is a 4% increase in planned air travel from the spring survey.
Of those planning a summer trip, 74% said they would travel domestically and 13% abroad, according to Trip Advisor.
Millennials, those between the ages of 25 and 40, were the group that expressed the most desire to travel, with 72% indicating they are planning a summer trip.
Trip Advisor said the data was compiled via an online survey of 2,500 consumers and search data from TripAdvisor.com and its affiliate sites between Jan. 1 and March 26.
