Where is everyone going for Thanksgiving this year? The answers may surprise you.

New York and Cancun rank among Americans’ top picks for turkey day destinations in 2021, according to Allianz Partners United StatesTop 10 in Thanksgiving Destination Index. Other popular draws for domestic travelers include Seattle and Boston, while London and Paris have returned to the international list after dropping in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Allianz Partners, a leading specialty consumer insurance company operating in 35 countries, has reviewed more than two million Thanksgiving Holiday travel itineraries * for round-trip flights from U.S. airports in the United States. November 20-25 and back November 26-30, to reveal the hottest national and international destinations for Thanksgiving 2021.

With the return of Broadway and popular traditions like the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, New York City reclaimed the No.1 position on the U.S. list, with Seattle slipping to second and Boston to third (up from two places compared to 2020). Atlanta and Dallas Fort-Worth rounded out the top five, while Los Angeles dropped three spots to sixth.

A long-time favorite in Allianz’s annual survey, Mexico ranks as the top international destination for Americans in 2021, with Cancun, San José Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta taking the top three spots. All but two of the top 10 international destinations – London and Paris, fourth and eighth respectively – are beach resorts, showing Americans crave relaxation and vitamin D during the Thanksgiving holidays.

* Methodology: Data from US travelers’ Thanksgiving 2021 plans was collected by analyzing the number of customers who used the online airline ticket and package reservation process of partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance, to generate routes for return flights departing from US airports on 11/20/2021 – 11/25/2021, return 11/26/2021 – 11/30/2021. In total, 2.3 million routes were analyzed.
