After sitting at home in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and dipping our toes back into travel in 2021, maybe it’s time to think about taking a bigger trip in 2022. And a big international travel as well.

Travel experts shared their thoughts on some of the world’s cheapest places to stay and eat, and GOBankingRates compiled a list of 10 international destinations that could offer adventure, ambiance and affordability for the new year.

Destinations range from Mexico to Asia to the Caribbean and beyond, and whether you want the beach and relaxation or the outdoors and nightlife, there’s something for everyone on this list. Of course, before and after booking, you’ll want to keep up to date with COVID-19 protocols and requirements. Read on to learn more about your potential vacation in 2022.

Cancun, Mexico

When it’s winter everywhere else in January, the average high in Cancun is 81 degrees. And it has the endorsement of Jeremy Scott Foster, CEO and founder of TravelFreak, a professional travel and adventure guide.

“Cancun has everything to offer its visitors; it’s practically a multi-generational destination with luxury resorts, sandy beaches and fantastic nightlife,” he said. “Fortunately, it’s also incredibly affordable. Where prices are highest during the first week of each month, prices then drop to around $50. [per night] for two people in a three-star hotel and $80 in a four-star hotel.”

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

If you prefer something less touristy in Mexico than Cancun, head to another part of the Yucatan Peninsula. You’ll enjoy similar weather, plenty of places to swim and snorkel, and experience the local food scene at an affordable price.

“Towns a bit off the tourist mecca of Cancun, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Merida, offer an incredible variety of activities, exquisite cuisine and inexpensive accommodations,” said Wes Jacobs, founder from Apollo Medical Travel. “Younger group travelers can consider staying in hostels with bunk beds for $8 a night. Airbnb accommodation in a private room or boutique hotel starts at around $25 a night.”

India

For Kevin Mercier, a travel blogger, India is the place to visit in 2022.

“I think India is one of the countries travelers need to start their research in 2022,” he said. “Travelers can find everything from beautiful mountains, beaches, wildlife tours, culinary delights and delicious local drinks here. India is also one of the best and cheapest places for a romantic vacation .”

How affordable? Right now, very affordable given the favorable exchange rate of rupees to dollars.

“Unless you’re looking to stay in a five star hotel or resort, you’ll be hard pressed to spend $50 a day here. You can get away with around $30 in most Indian cities staying in houses cheap guesthouses rather than hotels.The average single person price of accommodation in India is around 1,120 rupees ($15).

Kenya

If you’ve always dreamed of a safari, 2022 could be the year.

“I would suggest travelers consider East Africa. You can expect to pay as little as $15 a night for hotel stays and you’ll get what you pay for,” said Will Hatton, Founder from The Broke Backpacker travel blog. “You’d be hard-pressed to book a place in a 30-bed dorm in Australia for that kind of money, so take your hard-earned cash and spend it where it’s spreading so much.

“Kenya is a very diverse country with many options to choose from. You will find that most places offer safari and the beach at a reasonable price.”

Istanbul

Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city by population, has become a destination both for those looking to travel on a budget and for those with a little more to spend on vacation, said Sean Lau, expert in travel and travel blogger at LivingOutLau.

“One of the best travel destinations in the world in 2022 is Istanbul,” he said. “As the value of the Turkish Lira continues to fall, Istanbul is becoming one of the best value-for-money travel destinations. Discover the captivating history of one of the most influential cities in the world, savor a delicious Turkish cuisine and discover the magnificent Turkish craftsmanship.”

Lau said a luxury hotel would cost no more than $100 a night, with budget hotels available in the $20 range.

Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is an Indonesian island for adventurers. Hike to a waterfall in the middle of a jungle, go snorkeling or diving, or climb Mount Rinjani, an active volcano. When you are done with your adventures, stop at Air Kalak hot springs to enjoy its medicinal properties.

“For those looking for somewhere cheap, well, Lombok offers a wide selection of just about anything,” said James Cutajar, who runs The Travel Deck, a website focused on South Asia. -East. “Hotels start at around $30 a night and food is just as affordable. For example, grilled fresh fish, including sides, won’t cost you more than $10.”

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

“One destination that we are already seeing a lot of bookings for 2022 that is already very affordable is Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic,” said Val Streif, marketing manager for GetMyBoat, a boat rental app similar to Airbnb. “The Dominican Republic is often considered one of the most affordable destinations in the Caribbean, offering budget travel in an area where many islands only offer pricey luxury resorts and expensive hotels.”

The seaside destination also “offers a lot of authentic culture and unique experiences, while providing all the tourist amenities you want on vacation,” Streif said.

Phuket, Thailand

Phuket reopened to visitors fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in July, with some hotel rooms just $1 a night to attract tourists. While prices might not be that low in 2022, it’s still poised to be a bargain, said Luke Charny, the founder of A Chef’s Tour, which runs culinary tours in Asia and Latin America.

Charny picks Phuket as the place to be in 2022 because of quiet beaches, excellent tourist facilities and “some really good discounts”. He said travelers should be able to get rooms facing the beach for $20 a night.

Tallinn, Estonia

Henrik Jeppesen, travel blogger and founder of Every Country in the World, loved Tallinn so much he moved there.

“Tallinn has a fantastic old town with well-preserved buildings and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” he said. “Best value for money is one of the month-long stays at the beautiful, contemporary Citybox Hotel from just 350 Euros (approx. $405 USD) per month. “If you’re looking for a shorter visit, Hestia Hotel Kentmanni is a Fantastic hotel in a very quiet location with great deals including breakfast and spa access. The Serbian capital offers a mix of historical sites, river views and nightlife. Torben Lonne, co-founder and editor of DiveIn.com review guide, recommends it for its “lively atmosphere, friendly people, and inexpensive food and drink.”

“You can find some really good accommodation deals and rent entire apartments for $20 or $30 a night,” he said. “As Belgrade is very well connected by public transport, you don’t need to be located in the city center to easily access all the attractions. Being further from the city center reduces prices considerably and allows you to see other parts of When it comes to food and drink, most traditional restaurants are very cheap…. More importantly, the food is delicious and the chefs mostly use quality organic ingredients that you can also find at one of the farmers markets each day.”
